How do I stop others from stealing my email address to use for spamming?
I’m getting "mail undeliverable" messages sent to me for messages I never sent. And the content that’s being sent out is clearly spam. I have sent a message to the Yahoo "contact us" site, but haven’t heard back yet. Trying to avoid letting the flood gates of my email address being used for spam. So far undeliverable addresses aren’t from my address book. Anyone know how to stop this?
Spammers can use any "sent by" or "reply to" address they want. It’s called address spoofing. Often, they just use random names and characters from only of the thousands of domains.
It sounds like they happen to be using your email. Since none of the messages are coming back from your contacts, it may not be due to a trojan on your own machine. Just bad luck.
Eventually, your email could get into a known spammer data base, and they will move on to another email. You won’t be able to use your address to send to anyone that is using a spam filter and/or doesn’t have you email in their address book.
Often, the spammers change email before that happens.
