If i have a listed building and have to dismantle a chimney because it is dangerous do i have to rebuild it?

Short answer: probably not.
Longer answer: it depends upon whether any local building codes require the structure to retain the same exterior appearance (like Historical District codes).

You may need a building demolition permit to remove the chimney; check with your local building codes department. They should also be able to tell you what, if any, restrictions there are on permanently removing the chimney.

  1. contact the people responsible for listed buildings in your area BEFORE you do anything at all and they will tell you what must be done…hope this helps
