well about any mid size case will do, PSU about 500w now there are 2 types od CPU power plugs a 6 pin and a 4 pin so make sure you check which your motherboard has. motherboard i prefer a full ATX but any size will do but you will want to look the board up to see what CPUs are compatible. You got two main choices when it comes to motherboards, one for and Intel CPU or AMD CPU. Intels are nicer but cost more if you go with AMD make sure you had some extra fans to the case cause they run a bit hot. RAM again check what you motherboard supports and the max. Now you need a HDD given his age probaly 160GB check the board but it should support SATA which is faster you want a 7500 RPM HDD. DVD RW drive and an OS if you put Vista on it make sure you have atleast 2GB of RAM. that should do it if you have any questions feel free to message me.
References :
i have an article that list parts if you're looking to build a mid to mid-high range pc for under $500. all the parts are listed as well as the links to newegg.

i don't get paid for any parts you buy as i'm not a newegg affiliate, i just love them!
